The potato, a truly wondrous tuber

The potato, is there anything that sounds more German?

But did you know that the potato is related not only to tomatoes and peppers, but even to tobacco? They all belong to the nightshade family.

The actual plant, i.e., its leaves and berries, which are exposed to the sun above ground, are poisonous. However, since the potato is the tuber of the plant and grows below the earth's surface, it can be consumed without problems when cooked.

This is also where the name of the potato comes from, by the way. It goes back to a Latin expression meaning "earth tuber".

The potato originates from South America, where it was cultivated by the Incas more than 3000 years ago. Its origin is probably in the high Andes of Chile, Bolivia and Peru.

In the 16th century, the potato came to Europe and thus to Germany with the explorations of seafarers. During the Thirty Years' War, the potato then gained great importance as a cultivated plant and thus became one of the most important foodstuffs of that time. Thus, the potato gained more and more importance in German cuisine and is nowadays almost indispensable.

But what actually makes the potato so valuable for our body?

First of all, it is important to note that potatoes should never be eaten raw, as they contain toxic substances (glycoalkaloids) as well as starch, which is very difficult for our body to digest. So be careful: Always enjoy potatoes only cooked, steamed or fried!

But once cooked, the potato contains important and healthy substances for us.

For example, potatoes contain a lot of vitamin C and also a lot of fiber. In addition, high-quality protein is included, as well as important minerals such as potassium.

In addition, the potato keeps us full for a long time thanks to its fiber content.

In the kitchen, the potato has many uses. Besides baked potatoes or oven fries, you can create crispy fried potatoes as well as boiled potatoes or jacket potatoes from the miracle tuber. Whether as a side dish with fish, meat or even in stews or as a cream soup, the potato can simply do it all. Without it, a piece of our home cuisine would somehow be missing.
